“Aw yeah, magic pie! Good thinking, Kaya!” Meeko squeaked, feeling a surge of energy course through her limbs like she’d just been struck by lightning.

With a whoop of glee, she bounded after the golden ray, bare feet practically skimming the surface of the water as she embraced the supernatural speed that her mother’s home cooking granted her. The great fish made one final, desperate leap for a nearby waterfall, but Meeko was having none of that. She pounced like a cat, tackling the ray in midair and sinking her razor-sharp teeth into its gilded flesh.

They hit the water with an enormous splash, tumbling over the edge of the small waterfall in a froth of bubbles and churning foam. For a moment, all was chaos and the roar of rushing water. Then, gasping, Meeko hauled herself onto the grassy bank just past the waterfall’s plunge pool. The ray, now still and glassy-eyed, was dragged unceremoniously behind her by its tail.

Brisco and Kaya quickly caught up, her boyfriend red-faced and panting like he’d just run a marathon through a swamp. He bent over, hands braced on his knees as he tried to catch his breath.

“Okay,” he wheezed, nodding, “that was pretty exciting.”

Meeko just laughed hoarsely as she took a moment to catch her breath. She gave the fallen ray a congratulatory smack on its broad flank. “Did you see that?! I actually had to swim a bit there! I bet this was one of the trials for the River Emperor quest!”

Right on cue, shimmering golden letters began unfolding in the air before Meeko’s eager eyes:
